SUBSTANCE ABUSE
The problem of substance abuse affects
students and their communities throughout higher education. As with most
societal conditions, the causes vary. There are studies that suggest a strong
genetic correlation. Sometimes it is associated with the stress of a new
environment or the pressures associated with an academic program. Sometimes it
develops from the independence or choice presented by their new living
situation. This is a particular concern in study abroad where the excitement of
new surroundings along with more flexible cultural customs can influence one to
“let loose”.
Whatever the cause, substance abuse within
study abroad presents a real safety concern. One’s ability to cope with a
danger is already an issue in a new environ. This is magnified if one’s
faculties are hampered. This problem is discussed further in the SAFETY section
of this HEALTH & WELLNESS discussion.
There is also the concern as to what affect
substance abuse has on one’s long term well-being. Much has been done at
both the institutional and national levels to help address this concern. If you
have a concern about yourself or a friend, it is strongly recommended that you
seek help. Few people have the capacity or the perspective to deal with this issue
independently. If there is not an on-site staff person able to help, contact an
advisor from home.
